50 Sheds Of Grey

Marc Hogan was bet £1 that he couldn’t become a stand up comic in less than 12 months and perform a one man comedy show at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival for 21 nights. He won the bet!

I’m building one of those garden offices at the moment or as I like to call it an executive shed.

I’ve wanted a garden office for years and suddenly I had an opportunity to get one.

I ordered it from a company in Romania (same old story, these Eastern European sheds coming over here and undercutting our British sheds).

First Mistake
I’ve done quite a lot of research over the years but I probably didn’t do enough research. Note to self: 10 minutes of browsing on the internet at midnight whilst drunk does not qualify as research.

Second Mistake
Having bought this over the Internet I never saw what a completed version looked like.

Third Mistake
I took a week off in December, I thought it would be ‘fun’ to build it myself, I mean I’ve see ‘Changing Rooms’ and ‘60 Minute Makeover’, how hard could it be? At the very worst it would be like that scene in the film ‘Witness’ where the all the Amish (and Harrison Ford) build a barn. I’m sure all my neighbours would help…

The Reality

Things haven’t gone well.

The shed arrived in ‘kit’ form, and what I mean by kit is that it arrived in thousands of pieces of unlabelled wood. My garden looked like the biggest and most dangerous game of Jenga you ever saw.

Just like a dating website the pictures of my office looked a lot better on the web than it did on the flesh.

It turns out I’m not Harrison Ford and the people of my village are not the Amish. Neither of us have a clue about how to build a barn… or office for that matter. And unlike the Amish my neighbours have not taken a vow of non-violence…

So I have a half completed office at the moment, it’s leaking and I’m now going to have to hire a builder to finish it.

So Marc what have you learnt from this sorry affair?

Well like HS2, the 4th runway at Heathrow, the Microsoft Surface tablet, if you rush into something and don’t have the right people for the job it really can cost you a shed load of cash.

Merry Xmas everyone see you in January!

New Auditel Feedback

New feedback:

You never really know how a keynote speaker is going to go down when placed in front of a network of 200 business owners. You only really find that out from the feedback you receive. So when all 200 say ‘fantastic’ you can feel safe in the knowledge that you got something right; and Marc has truly got something right!

Laugh out loud funny, commercially astute and a message that combines both humour and common sense business practices made for a thoroughly entertaining evening.”

Matt Sidwell Director of Network Development UK & Ireland, Auditel UK Ltd.
