Awaken the somewhat taller person within!

In August 2008 Marc Hogan was bet £1 that he couldn’t become a stand up comic in less than 12 months and perform a one man comedy show at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in August 2009 for 21 nights. He won the bet!

Anthony Robbins is about 8 foot tall it’s very easy for him to awaken his inner giant. Me I’m 6 foot and a bit (that bit is very important) and I find that my inner giant is somewhat sleepier than Mr Robbins…

Every self-help book I’ve ever read, and my God I’ve read a lot, always suggests taking massive and I mean MASSIVE action. The thing is if you’ve ever embarked on a fitness regime or a diet and in that first week you ran 5 miles every day only ate a lettuce leaf every three hours and drank 24 Litres of water a day you will know that by the second week (or perhaps the second day!) taking MASSIVE action can result in massive disappointment, failure, bitterness and regret…

When I took on my comedy challenge it was a massive goal and I’m not too proud to admit that that year was not a pleasant experience. Yes, the result was worth all the hard work, but looking back at the hard days, I think the reason I continued was because I’d invested so much time, money, and effort into achieving it. The question is could I have become a stand-up comic and done an Edinburgh show in 3 years or 5 years or 7 years? Of course I could, how do you think every other stand-up comic gets there? They set themselves smaller goals, first two minutes of material, then 5 minutes and so on and so on. But they approach that with massive amounts of zeal. They spend all their time thinking about that material, going out to practice it again and again. It can be slow progress but just because it’s slow it doesn’t make it any less valuable

I really think that setting massive goals can sometimes be counter-productive; they can loom overhead scarily. So I’ve a suggestion for you, see if you like it. What if you didn’t set a massive goal, but instead set a moderate goal and approached it with massive zeal? Okay you might not transform your life in seven days but guess what the quick fix doesn’t always work. Sometimes it’s better to have moderate goals that take a little longer but at least you know in the end you will be successful….
